Is it just my impression that Michael Powell has changed his view on US broadband?
Michael Powell (Senior Advisor, Providence Equity Partners) appeared on CNBC this week and made a couple of comments on US broadband. To describe shortly, he said that US does not have a unified vision or policy to see that broadband is the infrastructure that will define 21st century and the country needs to adapt it much more widely; the quality also needs to be there as well. Much more bandwidth and faster speed. Countries like South Korea, China and India do have a unified vision or policy, and these countries are leading the adaptation of broadband, and it is already making a profound difference in the society (e.g., their economy is already growing rapidly because of that).
When Michael Powell was the FCC chairman, he appeared in a conference and he was asked about US broadband. He then described that it is unfair to compare the current state of US broadband adaptation to broadband adaptations in other countries like South Korea which has a much higher population density than US and thus it is much easier to develop a much more powerful broadband infrastructure.
It's not that Michael Powell has changed his position 180 degrees, but I got the impression that he was much more honest about his view on US communication industry and broadband than when he was the FCC chairman.
