23 million adults in U.S. can't read?

Study: 23 million adults in U.S. can't read

Four years ago, Carol Lewis signed up to be a literacy tutor and met a 40-year-old man who couldn't read a children's book to his two little girls.

The man, who did not want to be interviewed for this story, couldn't read the mixing instructions on the bags of concrete he worked with, so he'd watch and memorize what the other workers did. On coffee breaks, he'd hold up a newspaper like everyone else, pretending to read.

"He had all these tricks he used," said Lewis, of Wilmington. "He's not a dumb person, by any means. He just didn't get it in school, for whatever reason."

I was just watching a short report on Katrina, and the report briefly discussed about liberals and conservatives. The report said that liberals are seeking a bigger government in order to prepare for disasters like Katrina, while conservatives generally oppose to have a bigger government. We have been hearing about this in major TV news programs, but the use of the term is actually incorrect. Liberalism generally suggests a smaller government and it even suggests non-government often; however, those who want the government to play bigger roles in various situations are generally referred to as "liberals" in U.S. Sounds very funny, and this is perhaps one of good examples of the fact that 23 million Americans are not functionally literate (?).
